Space is limited to 24 participants per course, on a first come, first serve basis. Must be at least 14 years of age and have a functional bike to participate. Spanish- and Cantonese-language classes will be noted as such.

3 Hour Intermediate Courses
Taught by local League-Certified Cycling Instructors (LCI), the course will incorporate elements of the Smart Cycling: Traffic Skills 101 curriculum established by the League of American Bicyclists. Each participant must be at least 14 years old to participate (minors must have a parent sign a waiver prior to taking the class).The courses are structured as follows:

  • 1-hour of In-Class Instruction –  Rules of the Road incorporating the California Vehicle Code, basic bicycle safety, bikeway classification and more. Participants will receive materials relevant to the topics discussed in the course, including helmets, lights, and Smart Cycling manuals
  • 1-hour of Parking Lot Skills – Participants shall be instructed in bicycle safety inspections, safe road cycling and crash avoidance techniques. Each participant must bring a bicycle in order to participate.
  • 1-hour On-Street Bike Ride – The final portion of the class consists of a 4-6 mile community ride. Participants will be led on a predetermined route to practice techniques and strategies covered in the first two sessions in real conditions.


Upon completion of the class, each participant is eligible to receive a FREE bicycle helmet and set of bicycle lights. 

Teaching Locations
BikeSGV will be conducting 3-hour intermediate classes across Los Angeles County. Below are the potential cities identified for the project. Please check back periodically as classes are confirmed and added.

  • El Monte – SGV Bike Ed Center, 10900 Mulhall St., El Monte
  • Los Angeles – Metro Headquarters, Union Station, Downtown LA
  • Pasadena – Flintridge Center, 236 W. Mountain Ave., Pasadena 91103

Goals

  1. Teach safe road cycling, both in principal and in practice.
  2. Encourage use of helmets and lights to create safe road cycling culture.
  3. Reinforce topics covered in class by distributing instructive materials (Smart Cycling manuals).
  4. Inspire more local bicycle trips
